“感謝祭”THANKSGIVING DAY
アメリカでは明日11月24日"感謝祭"THANKSGIVING DAY(サンクスギヴィングディ)ですね。11月第４週の木曜日がTHANKSGIVING DAYと決まっています。
日本で言うお盆やお正月のようなもので、4日間ほど連休になります。地域によって違うと思いますが、スーパーも木曜日はお休みになります。そして翌日金曜日からセールをする所もあるようですね。また、この連休は帰省したり、友人を訪ねたり、旅行をしたりと道路も混雑気味となります。
そしてTHANKSGIVINGといえば七面鳥。スタフィング(パンと野菜をいためた物)を七面鳥に詰めて焼いたものが出ます。それからマッシュポテト。ちょっと甘めのグレービーソースと一緒です。茹でたインゲン豆もありましたね。
以下、アメリカン小学生教師amber(アンバー)さんの感謝祭の起源のお話しを掲載しておきます。ご参考になさって下さいね。
感謝祭の起源は、17世紀の初めにさかのぼります。本国イギリスから迫害を受けた清教徒たちは、希望を胸に大陸にやってきました。しかし、未開の地での生活は苦しく、たくさんの人が亡くなりました。そんな彼らを救ったのが、先住民（アメリカンインディアン）たちでした。
自分たちの土地に踏み込んできたよそ者を救おうと手を差し伸べたのでした。
彼らから学んだとうもろこしの栽培、七面鳥の養鶏などにより、清教徒たちは翌年、収穫を得ることができました。
そこで。その実りの秋に、感謝の祈りを捧げ、先住民たちも招いて祝宴を開いたのです。
それが、感謝祭の始まりだと言われています。その時彼らが食したものが、今でも感謝祭恒例のメニュー。
私がカリフォルニアでホームステイをしていたとき、ステイ先でTHANKSGIVINGの1週間くらい前に振る舞ってくれました。なぜ１週間前かというと、皆さん旅行の予定が入っていたからです。かくいう私も、向こうで知り合った3人の女性とヨセミテへドライブ旅行に出かけました。その話はまたの機会にしましょう。
