Valentine's Day
2月14日はバレンタインデイ。
デパートでもスーパーでも、チョコレート商戦が盛んですね。今日テレビで一粒3,000円のチョコ(何個だったか忘れましたが)が完売したといっていました(驚)。
正確にはValentine's Day(バレンタインズデイ)。聖バレンタインの日です。その起源は意外にシリアスなものでした。以下バレンタインの起源から引用。
西暦３世紀のローマでのことです。皇帝クラウディウス二世（在位268−270）は、若者たちがなかなか戦争に出たがらないので、手を焼いていました。その理由は彼らが自分の家族や愛する者たちを去りたくないからだと確信するようになったクラウディウスは、ついに結婚を禁止してしまったのです。ところが、インテラムナ（イタリア中部にある町で、現在のテラモ）のキリスト教司祭であるバレンチノ（英語読みではバレンタイン）は、かわいそうな兵士たちをみかねて、内緒で結婚をさせていました。それが皇帝の知るところとなったから大変です。しかも、当時のローマでは、キリスト教が迫害されていました。皇帝は、バレンチノに罪を認めさせてローマの宗教に改宗させようとしましたが、バレンチノはそれを拒否しました。そこで、投獄され、ついには西暦270年 2月14日に、処刑されてしまったということです。（269年という説もあります）。
日本では女性から男性に愛の告白として送る習慣が、定着していますがこんな深い起源があったのですね。
先日Aliceさんが来たときも言っていましたが、アメリカでは男性が女性にバラを送ったり、男女ともがカードを送ったりしているようですね。特にこの時期バラの花が高値になると言っていました(笑)。
いずれにしても○○チョコではなく、気持ちを込めたチョコを送りたいものです。
